What are some of your recommended best practices?

ShareThis provides users with a simple and easy way to implement sharing on any site via email, Twitter, Facebook and 40+ other social services. The better your content and sharing integration, the more users will share your content and increase socially-referred traffic and engagement. You can read about some of our latest publisher integrations here: http://sharethis.com/blog/2010/01/07/art-of-share

Button Placement

The ShareThis button can be placed anywhere on your page to enable you to share anything with anyone. Here are a few examples of where you can place the button to achieve maximum results.

Default Locations (WordPress, TypePad, Blogger)

A default option of placing the ShareThis button at the bottom of each blog post makes sharing information from sites created with popular blog platforms like WordPress, TypePad, or Blogger quick and easy. Site audiences can quickly and easily share the items without any additional scrolling or searching for the sharing tool.

Top of the Page

Typically you will see the ShareThis button placed at the top of an article on a news website. This generally fits in with the site’s look and feel due to the fact that news sites generally have a few options at the top of each story.

Sidebar

While it is possible to place the ShareThis widget in the sidebar of your site it is not recommended. Since the nature of ShareThis is to allow your content to be shared, just sharing the homepage will not proved the long tail type traffic that your site will need.

Additional Button Options

Multiple Icons

Sometimes you want to offer users visiting your site more than one sharing service on the page, but still take advantage of the ShareThis Analytics. Now, you are able to do this using the Multiple Icon option. For more information about using this option, please email support@sharethis.com. The Multi-Icon button can also be tailored more specifically to your site’s look/feel through our various APIs and our coming Sharing Service API.

Share Counters

We have also just released a share counter option, which lets your users see how much sharing activity your article is getting. Share counters urge a user to take action and give more real-time feedback on an article’s popularity. Get one of our new Share Counters.
