ShareThis Predictive Campaign Optimization Platform

April 6th, 2012

What’s the special sauce behind ShareThis campaigns? How does ShareThis work for advertisers? What data goes into your optimization techniques? These are questions we here at ShareThis get all the time. The answers are both simple and complex. Simple and easy solutions for advertisers and marketers and complex data science and mining that powers our platform.

ShareThis has a built a comprehensive predictive optimization platform to deliver the best campaign performance. Every campaign has certain marketing objectives – direct response or “DR” campaigns in particular are often measured against a KPI such as Cost Per Action (CPA) or Cost per Click (CPC). There are many different and complex KPI metrics to measure and track, but for simplicity we can stick to CPA or CPC for this discussion.

Once an Insertion Order (IO) is signed, the first phase for planning a campaign begins.

And the question of how and where to best deliver a marketers ads, which audiences to target and reach so on are presented. These questions become the initial input to the “Predictive Campaign Optimization” platform. The optimization platform continuously readjusts and tunes various optimization knobs along the lifecycle of the campaign the plan to ensure these goals are achieved.

The ShareThis predictive optimization platform utilizes two level of optimization: An outer loop optimization and an inner loop optimization.  In the outer loop optimization, the delivery and allocation across inventory is readjusted hourly and daily utilizing pricing and performance data but keeping the KPI goal in the view.  The actual delivery is done via RTB (Real-Time Bidding) to ensure we are always securing the best, highest performing inventory for our customers, in real-time.  The RTB does an inner-loop optimization to achieve the delivery goals.   The delivery goal is readjusted frequently not only taking the KPI goal such as conversions and clicks but also factors like seasonality and day of week. A predictive model uses past performance (e.g., domains, segments…), pricing, and several factors to determine the plan. This process is continuously performed to optimize campaigns at various time boundaries. This data is provided to the RTB (Real-Time Bidder) to do the inner loop optimization and delivery.

The outer loop provides allocation and pricing guidance on multiple dimensions such as domain and segment to RTB. The outer loop has a broader context to optimize the campaigns; many variables are considered for the optimizations such as networks, domains, segments, time, day, price, etc.

Modeling in order to make campaigns the most effective and drive the highest ROI, is a fascinating and complex problem that requires understanding of data, building great predictive algorithms and efficient systems to make it happen.

We’re thrilled at ShareThis to be able to leverage sharing data, SQI (Sharing Quality Index) predictor and campaign performance data to optimize each and every campaign to meet the goals of our customers efficiently and economically.

SXSW or Bust!

March 7th, 2012

We are putting the final touches on what promises to be a memorable SXSW for ShareThis. We will arrive in Austin this friday and we are very excited to meet clients, publishers, colleagues, locals and friends.

I have two main goals while at SXSW, check out as much tech stuff as I can during interactive week and get my barbecue on. So I guess I’m going to get my techecue fix very soon!

If you’re in Austin on Monday, ShareThis has teamed up with Starcom MediaVest’s, Kate Sirkin for the most talked about panel about what compels us to share and how brands can tap into the immense power of sharing. Along with Kate will be our CEO, Kurt Abrahamson, so be sure to check this out on Monday, March 12th at 3:30 pm at the Omni Downtown.  Stop by and pick up a wrist band for a free (yes, free) happy hour immediately afterwards. I’m a firm believer, sharing and spirits go hand in hand.

For those who will be in town this Friday, a few of us are going to Stubbs to check out Dr. Dog and The Givers. Stop in and say hi to the crew while enjoying some great music. If you are interested in getting tickets, here are the details.

But oh no, that’s not all! ShareThis has a few tricks up our sleeves and we will be hosting several events. And one of them is promised to be funkin awesome! So make sure you contact us for the 411 on the F.U.N.

For those who cannot make it to Austin, I will be sharing everything SXSW on Facebook and Twitter so be sure to follow us!

See ya in Austin!

ShareThis Adds ‘Domain Access Manager’ for Analytics Sharing

March 1st, 2012

At ShareThis, we like to celebrate occasions. And to celebrate the first day of March, (Seems like as good an occasion as any) we are going to do just that by launching a feature called ‘Domain Access Manager’. In a nutshell, it allows publishers to share access to their analytics with other ShareThis users.

This addresses two of the user requests that we have received the most over the last few months

1. A domain is being managed or monitored by multiple users (eg: different employees within a company).

Solution: Just login to your account and click on Domain Access Manager on the right hand side navigation. Add the email address (either of an existing ShareThis user or someone you would like to invite) and you are done. If they are an existing user, they will have access to  the domain analytics when they log in. And if they are not currently a ShareThis user, they will receive an invite asking them to register with ShareThis and get access to your domain.

2. A user is managing multiple domains (eg: a company might own many domains).

Solution: Just ask the domain owner (who registered the domain with us) to grant permissions (as described above) to one of your accounts for each of those domains. And next time you log in, you will see links to view the analytics dashboard for all those domains. You can also toggle between different domains in the analytics dashboard for quicker navigation.

Hope this makes your lives a tiny bit easier. Let us know what you think – comments, suggestions, feedbacks, compliments, criticism – send them all to us at feedback@sharethis.com or Facebook or Twitter.

Happy “20 days until Spring” day,

-ShareThis, Inc.

Sharing Data Around Oscar Winners Reveal It’s No Popularity Contest

February 29th, 2012

If there’s one thing we love sharing about, it’s Oscar. From the glitz and glamour of the red carpet to the onstage theatrics, tears and tradition, viewers are never left wanting for more and the 84th Annual Academy Awards were no exception. This year, a number of new faces were mixed in to the parade of usual suspects on the red carpet, some of whom stole the show later that night. We shared about who they were wearing, what they were wearing – or, weren’t wearing, in the case of Angie’s right leg – what they said, who was predicted to be the favorite, and who ended up taking home the prize.

There were some pleasant surprises among the winners, like the touching silent film, “The Artist,” in the category of Best Picture. And we nodded our heads knowingly as Hollywood sweetheart Meryl Streep swept onstage to accept the statue for Best Actress in a Leading Role. So we were curious about how sharing activity leading up to the Awards reflected the outcomes. Predictably, sharing around most celebrities, films and awards categories spiked the day of Oscars. But based on what we uncovered, it was certainly no popularity contest. Let’s take a closer look.

On the Best Director front, newcomer Michel Hazanavicius of “The Artist” fame may have won over the Academy, but Hollywood titan Martin Scorsese charmed the masses. Scorsese generated nearly three times as much sharing activity as the winning director, who came in next to last, beating out only “Tree of Life” director Terrence Malick.

Of the women up for Best Actress, it was the lesser known Viola Davis of “The Help,” not Ms. Streep, who reigned when it came to sharing activity. It was a close call, as both generated a flurry of online sharing, but Ms. Davis squeaked out on top. The remaining three nominees – Glenn Close, Rooney Mara and Michelle Williams – combined managed to stir up only as much sharing as Ms. Davis or Ms. Streep each did on their own.

On to the dashing men of the Oscars. The one and only George Clooney may not have taken home a trophy, but he wiped the floor with his fellow nominees when it came to online sharing. Perhaps he picked up a few tips from his ex-wrestler girlfriend who looked like a golden trophy herself or maybe it’s just that he can rock an Armani tux like no other – either way, he was the most shared subject of all the nominees on Oscar night, men or women.

See you next year in Hollywood!
